The Western Wall, Wailing Wall, Kotel or Buraq Wall is located in the Old City of Jerusalem in Israel. The wall was originally part of the retaining wall built by Herod the Great as an part of the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple that is known as the Temple Mound. It is holy to both Hebrew and Arabic communities. It is traditionally used by Jews for prayer; it has is called the "Wailing Wall", referring to the practice of Jews weeping at the site over the destruction of the Temples. The Jews were barred for centuries from praying at the Western Wall until that area of Jerusalem was recaptured during the 1967 Six-Day War.
