The rock musical Rent with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson is loosely based on the Puccini opera La Boheme about a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create in New York City. Starting as an off-Broadway production, it opened on Broadway at the Nederlander Theater on April 29, 1996 and closed on September 7, 2008, after a 12-year run and 5,123 performances. The original production won both a Tony award for best musical and a Pulitzer Prize. In 2005, it was adapted into a motion picture featuring most of the original cast members.
