David Saltzberg, Ph.D. (b. 1967) is an Astroparticle physics|astroparticle physicist and the science consultant for the CBS television situation-comedy, The Big Bang Theory, checking scripts and meeting with the producers, writers, actors, set decorators, prop masters, and other crew to help ensure scientific accuracy of the show. He has been the show's science consultant ever since the unaired pilot. He also writes a blog, The Big Blog Theory, that explains the science behind the episodes.
David Saltzberg is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He received a bachelor's degree in Physics in 1989 from Princeton University where he worked in the Princeton Cyclotron. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Chicago in 1994, where he measured the mass of the W boson at the Fermilab Tevatron and CDF detector.
Saltzberg returned to the U.S. and CDF as a faculty member at UCLA where he and his group helped build the CDF Run-II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. His group looks for signs of supersymmetry and measures exotic properties of the top quark.
Saltzberg's current interests are high energy particle physics and high-energy neutrino astronomy, using radio detection techniques. He is currently working on the ANITA project, which recently completed three successful scientific balloon flights in Antarctica, and also collaborating with the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
David Saltzberg appears on the following specials from The Big Bang Theory:
- Physicist to the Stars (2009)
- Access All Areas (2012)
- He appeared once sitting in the background of a cafeteria scene.
- He posted good comments about Leonard and Sheldon's bubble theory.
- He posted good comments about Sheldon and Amy's Super-Asymmetry paper.
