Carbon Dating and a Stuffed Raccoon is the seventh episode of the second season of the American comedy Young Sheldon. This episode aired on November 1, 2018.

Summary []

George takes Sheldon to a lecture on carbon dating, which is also being attended by Paige. While eating in a restaurant, he is separately approached by Paige's parents, whose marriage is precarious because of the demands of raising Paige. The children become bored by the lecture and wander into a closed area of the museum. Meanwhile, Meemaw is holding a garage sale, and becomes upset by the sight of John wearing her dead husband's jacket.

Plot[]

One early morning, Sheldon opens his own personal safe. He proudly looks at his own 3 cards. Early day, Meemaw produces salad for breakfast. Sheldon comes in and announces he wants to go to a lecture about carbon dating, to which George says he will go; However, Meemaw thought he would help with the pending yard sale.

On Saturday morning, George drives Sheldon to the lecture. On the road, Sheldon asks about the age of the earth, and her mom believes the planet is 6,000 years old while he is open to the belief that it's millions of years old.

At home, Meemaw puts out items for her yard sale. Georgie and Missy are helping out as well. Meemaw teaches the two about haggling. She convinces them to bring the stuff outside.

Sheldon and his father arrive at the Natural Science Museum of Texas in Houston, when George sees the massive dinosaur, he talks about how much meat is in that thing. They put everything in the yard sale, and people come to look at wares. Mary is a bit disheartened that her dad's items are on sale, as such as his golf clubs, when Meemaw suggests that if it has sentimental value to her, she can buy it.

Sheldon is brought to the lecture and his dad leaves him reading a magazine. He immediately is greeted by Paige, someone he did not expect.

George went to a local diner to eat chicken wings and drink beer but is greeted by Paige’s mother, Linda, who had dropped Paige as well. She asks if she could join to which George says he doesn't mind, while George tries to watch the game on TV while eating wings. She opens a menu and looks at their pies, she starts crying and tells George about her relationship with Barry.

Meanwhile, the lecture starts. Dr. Barrett is surprised those two are so young and that they are there. Dr Barrett asks what carbon dating is, Paige answers the question but Sheldon tells a joke about how carbon dating is how they figured out how old his grandmother is, everyone laughs and at that moment, Sheldon learns that he is hilarious.

At the diner, Linda asks how George handles the stress of a special child, George tells her that they don't talk about it, Linda thinks that it doesn't sound like it could work but George tells her that he's having a nice day, meanwhile she's crying into her peach cobbler. Paige tells Sheldon that she’s not learning anything, Sheldon agrees, Paige suggests the idea of leaving the lecture, Sheldon doesn't want to until Paige calls him a baby, Sheldon and Paige leave the room so they can explore the entire museum.

Missy uses her haggling skills at Billy Sparks, who comes over and wants to purchase a raccoon statue, but only has 50¢ to pay for a $5 statue; Missy says it's okay and tells him the concept of haggling, Billy asks what middle are they meeting, Missy doesn't know. Meanwhile, John Sturgis comes over, wearing the jacket of her late husband. Meemaw tells him that he can't have it, Dr. Sturgis asks Mary what happened, Mary informs him who was the former owner of the jacket, but Dr. Sturgis still doesn't know what happened.

While Sheldon and Paige talk, they discuss their dreams of the future; Paige wonders if he got his concept from a TV show,; he rebuffs saying it was from a comic book.

Meanwhile, Linda still talks about Barry but Barry also arrives at the diner, George tells Barry that he just dropped off Sheldon at the science lecture but Barry tells George that his daughter is also at the science lecture.

When Sheldon and Paige explore exhibits, Paige sees a caveman exhibit and wants to go in, Sheldon doesn't want to but Paige calls Sheldon a baby again, which prompts Sheldon to go in. While Paige and Sheldon sits at the exhibit, Sheldon unknowingly tells a joke about how the cavemen are oddly a reminiscing of dinner with his family, Paige talks about her family and how they never eat dinner together: Paige thinks that her parents are in the process of getting a divorce, While Sheldon tells her that he's glue that holds his family together, a security guard comes and taps the glass and asks them why they are there.

Back to Missy, Billy tries to profit with 10¢ a week for a whole year and that he can tell people that she's his girlfriend, Missy haggles and proposes 15¢ a week and if he says hello to her at schoolshe says it back, meanwhile, John Sturgis apologizes about the jacket, Meemaw accepts the apology, Dr. Sturgis wants to buy a hula girl lamp, Meemaw says its a gift to him, Georgie mocks her with “nice haggle”, Meemaw responds with “nice mullet”.

At the museum, soon enough, Sheldon and Paige's parents come to the security office and picks them up; they are not happy about it and are told both did so because they were “bored”. The families go their separate ways, Sheldon asks George if he knew Paige's parents are getting a divorce, George tells Sheldon to keep walking.

At home, George kisses Mary, Mary asks what kind of trouble did he do, George tells her that he didn't do anything and tells her about Sheldon's trouble.

At dinner that night, Georgie tries to haggle Missy for more food, but is denied. Sheldon momentarily hallucinate his family turning into cavemen and howl at him.

  • The episode is set on Saturday, 17 November 1990. The Baylor Bears defeats the Rice Owls 17–16 in the football game George Cooper Sr. tries to watch while Paige's parents talk to him.
